How long does SEO take? What to expect month by month

Why search takes time, and what should change in the first six months.

"How long until I'm on the first page?" is where almost every SEO conversation starts. The honest answer is that it depends, and it's probably longer than you'd like.

For most local businesses, the first real movement comes somewhere between three and six months in, and competitive searches in big cities can take a year or more. Here's what usually happens in that time, and how to tell it's working before the phone starts ringing.

Why it takes time

SEO is slow because Google is careful. Before it ranks a page, it has to find it, read it, work out what it's about and decide whether to trust it more than the pages already there. Each step takes time, and the last one takes the longest.

Trust comes from signals that build up: pages that answer real questions, other sites linking to you, reviews, the same name, address and phone number across the web, and visitors who find what they came for. You can't rush most of them.

How long it takes for you depends on three things:

  • Where you're starting. A new site with no history takes longer than an established one that just needs fixing.
  • How competitive it is. "Personal injury lawyer" in a big city is a long fight. "Tile repair" in a small town might not be.
  • How steadily you work at it. A little every month beats a burst of activity followed by nothing.

Months one to three

The first months are mostly groundwork. You won't see many calls from it yet, but everything else stands on it.

  • Fix the technical basics. Set up Google Search Console, submit a sitemap, fix any pages Google can't index, and sort out speed and mobile problems.
  • Set up your Google Business Profile properly. The right categories, services, hours and photos, and a description that says what you do and where.
  • Give each service its own page, written for the people who search for it.
  • Make your details match everywhere. Your business name, address and phone number should be the same on your site, your Google profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp and the directories in your trade.
  • Start asking for reviews, and make it a habit. Here's how to do it without being pushy.

What you'll see: Search Console showing more impressions, which means Google is starting to show your pages, even if few people click yet.

Months four to six

This is usually when things start to move, especially for local searches and longer, more specific phrases.

  • Write about what people search for. Answer the questions customers ask before they buy, one page or post at a time.
  • Earn local links. Sponsorships, business groups, suppliers, partners and the local paper. A few real links from your area matter more than hundreds from nowhere.
  • Improve what's nearly there. Search Console shows you pages sitting on page two. Small improvements to those often pay off sooner than brand new pages.
  • Keep your profile active. Post updates, add photos and reply to every review.

What you'll see: more clicks, more searches you appear for, and the first calls and direction requests from your Business Profile.

Signs it's working

Rankings jump around from day to day, so don't judge by searching for yourself on your own phone. Look at the trend over months instead:

  • Impressions are climbing in Search Console, and the number of different searches you appear for is growing.
  • Clicks follow, usually a few weeks behind.
  • Your Business Profile shows more calls, website visits and direction requests.
  • New customers mention Google when you ask how they found you.

If you see none of that after six months of steady work, the problem is the approach, not just the timing. Ask what's been done, and why.

If you need calls now, run Google Ads while SEO builds. Ads stop the moment you stop paying, while SEO keeps working.

If you'd like help, our SEO and local search work follows this same plan, and ongoing growth keeps it going month after month.
