  • Hosting includedNo servers or updates to think about.

Cons

  • A look other sites shareTemplates are used by thousands of businesses.
  • Hard to leaveA Wix site can't be exported; moving means rebuilding it.
  • Apps add upEach add-on is often another monthly charge.
  • Heavier pagesEvery page carries the builder's own code, felt most on phones.

  • Your timeSomeone in the business has to build it, update it and fix it.

Our take

Fine for a side project, thin for a business.

Wix will get a page online, and for a hobby or a test that may be all you need. A business that depends on its website for calls, bookings and local rankings outgrows it, and the longer it stays, the more there is to move.

Signs your Wix site is holding you back

When a Wix site stops pulling its weight. Eight we see most.

If the site looks fine but the phone doesn't ring, it isn't fine.

These are the gaps we find on most Wix sites we're asked to replace.

  1. 01Slow on a phonePages that hang on mobile data while the builder's code loads.
  2. 02It looks like everyone else'sA template thousands of other businesses picked first.
  3. 03App bills every monthA charge for forms, another for reviews, another for booking.
  4. 04A feature you can't addThe thing customers ask for isn't in the app market.
  5. 05Missing from local resultsPages that never make it into the map results and town searches.
  6. 06Enquiries that go nowhereBasic forms, no photos, no routing, no follow-up.
  7. 07Nobody to callWhen something breaks, it's a help article and a ticket.
  8. 08Stuck where you areYears of pages you can't take with you if you leave.

Wix or a custom website, explained

What to weigh before you choose. In plain English.

What Wix is, and what it isn't

Wix is a website builder: you pick a template, change the words, photos and colours in an editor, and Wix hosts the result. You can have something online the same week, and you never touch code.

What Wix isn't is a website designed around your business. The template decides the layout, the editor decides what you can change, and the platform decides what the site can do. That's the trade: ease now, limits for as long as you stay.

How the cost adds up

Wix charges a monthly plan, and the plan you need depends on what the site has to do: taking payments and bookings sits on the higher tiers. On top of that come the apps. Many of the add-ons that make a site useful, like advanced forms, reviews or scheduling, carry their own monthly charge. Over a few years those small amounts add up to a real number, for a site that still looks like a template.

A custom site works the other way round: a project price to design and build it, then a monthly fee that covers hosting, updates, backups and the changes you ask for. You know both before anything starts, and nothing is bolted on later.

  • Wix: a monthly plan, plus paid apps
  • Stratasis: a fixed project price, then one monthly fee

Every Wix page carries the code that runs the builder, whether the page needs it or not, and every app adds more. A page built for one business, with only the code it needs, is lighter, and the difference shows most on a phone on mobile data, which is how most local customers find you.

Wix gives you the search basics: titles, descriptions and a sitemap. A custom site goes further, with the structure of every page, the structured data Google reads and a page for each service and town planned from the start. If being found in your area matters, that control is worth having.

Design, and growing past the template

A template is designed for everyone, so it fits no one exactly. You can change colours and fonts, but the bones stay the same, and so does the feeling that you've seen the site before.

A design made for your business starts from what your customers need to know and do, in your brand. And when you need something the template never planned for, like a client portal, an estimate request with photos or a booking flow tied to your calendar, it's built as part of the site, not squeezed in.

Owning your site, and leaving Wix

Your domain can move anywhere, but a Wix site can't. Wix doesn't let you export the site itself to host it elsewhere, so leaving means rebuilding it. That's worth knowing before you put years of pages into it.

A custom site is yours: the code, the domain and every account are in your name, and you can take them wherever you like.

Moving from Wix to a site of your own

Switching is less work than most people expect. We plan the new site, carry your words and photos across, keep your domain, and point every old address at its new page so Google and your customers follow along. Your Wix plan runs until the new site goes live.

  • Your domain stays
  • Every old page redirected
  • No day without a website

Questions and answers

Still have a question?

Ask us anything. We'll answer it straight, even if the answer is that we're not the right fit.

  • For a hobby or a first test, it's fine. It runs out when the site has to bring in customers, take bookings and rank in your area: that's when businesses move to a site built for them.

  • Every page loads the builder's own code as well as yours, and each app adds more. Smaller images and fewer apps help a little; a site built with only the code it needs helps most.

  • Yes. Wix sites can't be exported, so we rebuild the site properly, carry your content across, keep your domain and redirect every old page to its new one.

  • No. We design every site for the business and build it in code, so it carries nothing it doesn't need and you own all of it.

  • When the website is how customers find and choose you, yes: it loads quicker, ranks better and turns more visits into calls. A Wix site costs less to start and more to live with.

  • Not if the move is done properly. Every old address is redirected to its new page, so search engines carry your rankings across. They usually hold through the move, and often improve once the new pages settle in.

  • You can ask us for any change and it's made for you as part of looking after the site. Where you'd like to edit something yourself, like menus, prices or posts, we build a simple way to do it.

  • Most small sites take a few weeks from the first call to launch, and your Wix site stays live until the day we switch, so there's never a day without a website.
