In plain English
It's asking every new customer "how did you hear about us?", automatically, and writing down the answer every time.
Used in a sentence
“Conversion tracking is set up for calls, forms and bookings, so the ads optimise for real leads, not clicks.”
“We were spending on ads for a year without knowing which ones brought in a single customer.”
In detail
Tracking works by placing tags, like the Google tag or the Meta Pixel, on your website, and by connecting call tracking and booking tools. When a visitor completes an action you've marked as a conversion, it's recorded against the ad, keyword or campaign that brought them. Server-side connections make the data more reliable as browsers block more tracking.
Ad platforms use that data to find more people like the ones who converted. Without it, they optimise for clicks, which isn't the same thing. Tracking should respect privacy rules and your visitors' consent choices.
Why it matters for your business
Without conversion tracking, you can't tell which ads make money and which just spend it.
- Shows which ads bring real leads
- Lets ad platforms find similar customers
- Turns reports into decisions
Easy to mix up
Conversion tracking isn't analytics on its own. Analytics shows visits and behaviour; conversion tracking ties specific actions back to the ads and sources that caused them.
