In plain English
It's a direct line to the inspector. Instead of guessing why you're not ranking, Google tells you what it found, what it couldn't read and what people searched before clicking you.
Used in a sentence
“We've verified the site in Search Console and submitted the sitemap, so you'll see exactly which searches bring people in.”
“Search Console showed people finding us for a service we don't even list on the site.”
In detail
After you verify ownership of your site, Search Console reports the searches you appear for, how often you're shown and clicked, and your average position. It lists which pages are indexed and why others aren't, flags mobile and speed problems, and lets you submit sitemaps and ask Google to look at new pages.
It's also where Google warns you about serious issues, like security problems or penalties. Checking it monthly catches problems early and shows where to focus, such as searches you nearly rank for or pages that get shown but rarely clicked.
Why it matters for your business
Search Console is the clearest view you'll get of how Google sees your website, and it's free.
- See the searches that find you
- Catch indexing problems early
- Submit sitemaps and new pages
Easy to mix up
Search Console isn't Google Analytics. Search Console shows what happens in Google before the click; Analytics shows what visitors do on your site after it.
