What is a SERP?

A SERP, or search engine results page, is the page Google shows after you search: the ads, the map, the regular results and everything in between.

SERP, explained

Simple first, then the detail. With how it's used, and why it matters to a business.

In plain English

It's the shelf at the store when a customer asks for something. Your goal is to be on that shelf, at eye level, with packaging that makes them reach for you.

Used in a sentence

“For "bathroom remodel near me" the SERP shows four ads, the map pack, then the organic results, so you need a plan for each.”

“I search for our business every week to see what the SERP looks like for our main service.”

In detail

Today's results pages mix many features: paid ads, the local map pack, regular organic results, AI-generated overviews, questions people also ask, images, videos and shopping results. Which ones appear depends on the search. A local service search looks very different from a "how to" search.

Looking at the SERP for your main searches tells you where the opportunities are. If the map dominates, your Business Profile matters most. If questions appear, clear answers on your pages can earn a spot. Ranking first among the organic results can still sit below several other features.

Why it matters for your business

Knowing what the results page looks like for your searches shows you where customers' attention really goes.

  • Shows which features to compete for
  • Reveals who you're up against
  • Guides where to spend effort

Easy to mix up

Ranking first isn't the same as being first on the SERP. Ads, the map pack and other features can sit above the first organic result.

  • Results change with location, device and search history. For local searches, where the searcher is matters a lot.

  • Depending on the search: ads, a map with local businesses, organic results, AI overviews, related questions, images and videos.
