What is engagement on social media?

Engagement is how people interact with your posts: likes, comments, shares, saves and replies. It shows whether what you post connects with anyone.

Engagement, explained

Simple first, then the detail. With how it's used, and why it matters to a business.

In plain English

It's the difference between people walking past your stand and people stopping to ask questions. Plenty can see you; engagement is how many care enough to respond.

Used in a sentence

“Engagement is up since we started posting before-and-after videos of real jobs.”

“We had lots of followers, but hardly anyone ever liked or commented on our posts.”

In detail

Each platform counts engagement slightly differently, but it generally includes reactions, comments, shares, saves, link clicks and messages. Engagement rate compares those interactions with how many people saw the post, which is fairer than raw totals between posts.

Platforms show posts with strong engagement to more people, so engagement and reach feed each other. The posts that do best for local businesses are usually real ones: the team, the work, before-and-afters and answers to questions customers really ask.

Why it matters for your business

Engagement shows what your audience cares about, and helps your posts reach more of them.

  • Shows which content connects
  • Helps posts reach more people
  • Starts conversations that lead to jobs

Easy to mix up

Engagement isn't reach. Reach is how many people saw a post; engagement is how many interacted with it.

  • It varies widely by platform and audience. Compare your posts with each other to see what your audience responds to.

  • Post real content about your work and team, ask questions, reply to every comment, and use formats like short video that platforms favour.
