What is reach on social media?

Reach is the number of different people who saw your post or ad, counting each person once however many times they saw it.

Reach, explained

Simple first, then the detail. With how it's used, and why it matters to a business.

In plain English

It's how many different people walked past your window display, not how many times the same neighbour strolled by.

Used in a sentence

“This month's reach was mostly people who don't follow you yet, which is exactly what we wanted.”

“Our posts reach the same few hundred followers every time.”

In detail

Reach counts unique people; impressions count every time content was shown, including repeats. Organic reach comes from followers and the platform recommending your posts; paid reach comes from ads. Platforms decide organic reach partly by how people engage with what you post.

Growing reach means getting in front of new people: posting formats the platforms push, like short video, using local tags and topics, collaborating with other local businesses, and putting a modest ad budget behind your best posts.

Why it matters for your business

Reach tells you how many potential customers your posts actually get in front of.

  • Shows how far posts travel
  • Separates new people from repeat views
  • Grows with engagement and ads

Easy to mix up

Reach isn't impressions. One person seeing a post three times is one reach and three impressions.

  • Platforms show posts to more people when they're engaging and in favoured formats like short video. Plain text and link posts tend to reach fewer people.

  • Reach is unique people who saw your content; impressions are the total times it was shown, including repeat views.
